Figure California's documentary transfer tax, Florida's documentary stamp and intangible taxes, or confirm Texas's $0. Pick a state, enter the price, and the tax and the steps update as you type.
Subtracted before the tax is figured. A new loan the buyer takes out is not subtracted.
Leave at 0 unless the property is in a city with its own transfer tax. Check the county recorder.

Worked steps
The county documentary transfer tax is $0.55 per $500 of value, which is $1.10 per $1,000. It's figured on the value aftersubtracting any existing loan the buyer assumes. A new loan doesn't reduce it. Exam questions usually use the $1.10 per $1,000 shortcut.
Example
A home sells for $600,000 and the buyer assumes the seller's $200,000 loan. What is the county documentary transfer tax?
The statute counts each $500 "or fractional part," so the recorder rounds the value up to the next $500. That changes the answer only when the value isn't a round number. Cities can also charge a transfer tax. A city tax at half the county rate is credited against the county tax, so the total stays $1.10 per $1,000; some cities charge more than that, so check the county recorder for a real sale.

Florida taxes the deed and, separately, any new mortgage. Each $100 "or portion thereof" means you round the amount up to the next $100 before multiplying. Unlike California, the consideration includes any mortgage on the property, whether the buyer assumes it or not.
Example
A home in Orange County sells for $600,000. The buyer takes out a new $480,000 mortgage. Find the deed stamps, note stamps and intangible tax.
There's no cap on the stamp tax for a recorded mortgage. The $2,450 cap you may see applies to a note or other written obligation that isn't secured by a recorded mortgage.

Texas has no real estate transfer tax, so there's nothing to calculate. Since 2016 the Texas Constitution has barred new laws that tax a transaction conveying fee simple title to real property. If a Texas exam question asks about transfer tax, the answer is that the state doesn't have one.
Under Revenue and Taxation Code section 11911, a county may charge $0.55 for each $500 of value (or fraction of $500), which works out to $1.10 per $1,000. Loans the buyer assumes are subtracted first. Some cities add their own transfer tax on top, so check with the county recorder for a real sale.
Divide the total consideration by 100, round any fraction up, and multiply by $0.70. A $600,000 sale is 6,000 × $0.70 = $4,200. Miami-Dade County uses $0.60 per $100 instead, plus a $0.45 surtax unless the deed transfers only a single-family home.
Two: documentary stamp tax on the note and mortgage at $0.35 per $100 (or fraction) of the amount secured, and the nonrecurring intangible tax at 2 mills, or 0.2% of the loan. A $480,000 mortgage owes $1,680 in stamps and $960 in intangible tax.
No. Texas doesn't charge a transfer tax on real estate sales, and Article VIII, Section 29 of the Texas Constitution (added in 2015) bars any law passed after January 1, 2016 from imposing one on a sale of fee simple title.
