Types of Real Estate Investments
Investors can buy residential rentals (single-family and apartments), commercial property (office, retail, industrial), raw land held for appreciation, or invest indirectly through real estate investment trusts (REITs), limited partnerships and syndications. Residential rentals offer steady demand but more management. Office and retail depend on business conditions and longer leases. Raw land produces no income, carries taxes, and depends entirely on appreciation, making it among the most speculative. Indirect investments provide professional management and greater liquidity (publicly traded REIT shares) in exchange for less control.
